Preconceived idea #1 • “Synthetic diamonds, real diamonds ?”

Synthetic grass is no grass. Same goes for faux fur : it is nowhere close to the real thing. So naturally, when it comes to synthetic diamonds, drawing the same conclusion is tempting. Yet, a synthetic diamond is a real diamond, purely and simply. The use of the term “synthetic”, despite being both error inducing and scientifically incorrect, is however required by the law…

In an upcoming article, Alix Gicquel, the only French scientist growing diamonds intended for jewellery, will review the “impossibility to synthesize a single body”, thus revealing the issue surrounding the use of the term “synthetic” to describe lab-grown diamonds.

Let us go back to our diamonds, mined or grown in labs, to be differenciated from the likes of moissanite or zircon, which are both whole different minerals with their own respective carbon-free compositions. Those stones imitate the brightness of diamonds, without ever quite reaching it.

There is only one difference between a lab-grown diamond and its mined counterpart : its origin. One is extracted from a mine while the other is cultured in a laboratory. Both are solely composed of carbon in its crystallized form, which is why we talk about a single body. They share the exact same crystallized structure and chemical composition. Today, lab-grown diamonds are cut and polished by the same master craftsmen and certified by every gemological institutes under the same exacting standards as mined diamonds, as they possess the same physical and optical properties.

Equally pure and bright, this 2.0 gem carries a new magic and shines with a new light. At the origin of this magic, a scientific prowess, as the human genius draws inspiration from Nature to offer a respectful and forward-looking alternative.
